Just two days after handing Johansen High its first Modesto Metro Conference loss of the season, Modesto was on the other end of Beyer's first conference win on Friday night.

The Gregori High Jaguars made history Thursday night on the wrestling mat. The Jaguars clinched an outright Modesto Metro Conference championship, the first outright boys title in the school's young history, by edging Beyer.

With the relatively low power ranking assigned the Modesto Metro Conference by the Sac-Joaquin Section, it will be difficult for any MMC girls team to make upward movement in the final two weeks of the regular season.

Junior forward Darren Trainor's 14-point effort led Turlock to a 46-40 victory over crosstown rival Pitman on Wednesday night, the first time in three tries this season Trainor has been on the winning side of this rivalry.

When Gary Porter took over as the basketball coach at Modesto Christian in 1996, it was supposed to be a one-year deal — just filling-in at a school in need. Now 15 years later, the Crusaders have won 13 section titles and two state titles and somehow along the way have never lost a league game.

Turlock High's girls are in control of the Central California Conference race, and a couple of more wins will all but clinch the title. That Sac-Joaquin Section isn't impressed by the possibility of a fifth straight title, though. If the playoffs started today, Turlock would be told that it's not welcome.

Riverbank’s initial power ranking in the Sac-Joaquin Section was pretty easy to guess. As the only team in the section to go undefeated in nonleague play, and with two league losses the Bruins would be a No. 2 or No. 3 seed in Division 4. For Riverbank, it becomes a matter of holding or improving on that No. 3 spot, which it did for now with Tuesday’s 70-59 victory over Escalon.
